Affinity Photo Review – The Bottom Line

You can’t beat the fact that you get a whole lot of what Photoshop offers at the fraction of a price.

I know that many photographers have heated dreams of Adobe Photoshop being free. But it is not going to happen. And the completely free software alternatives to Photoshop, like GIMP or the premium Pixelmator PRO, are simply not professional enough for the needs of serious photographers.

In many ways, it can replace Photoshop for most photographers and a great way to a lot of money in the long run compared to Photoshop’s subscription model.

In some areas, Affinity Photo is quite a bit behind Photoshop. However, Photoshop has also been around a couple of decades more than Affinity Photo, and I doubt if most photographers will actually miss the most advanced features.

If you have a very advanced and intensive post-processing workflow, you might be more comfortable sticking with Photoshop. But then again, you can create advanced stuff like luminosity masks in Affinity Photo. I would say that your workflow has to be really special for this to be your strongest argument.

However, the bottom line of this Affinity Photo review is that you should give serious thoughts to whether Affinity Photo could handle your advanced post-processing needs, in order to save a lot of money. It is a great photo editing app that can compete with the most advanced competitors on the market.

Improved RAW processing for batch processing

Affinity Photo’s RAW development has undergone quite the transformation since its initial debut in version 1.4—it’s had some notable improvements, some of which are explored in the article What’s new with RAW in Affinity Photo 1.7?. Up until now, though, those improvements have been restricted to the development of single RAW files when loaded into the Develop Persona.

With version 1.8, however, you can now take advantage of 32-bit output, removal of the default tone curve, improved demosaicing, improved noise reduction, automatic lens corrections and wide colour space support when using RAW files with batch processing.

Here are a couple of workflow examples:

• Panorama stitching: if you set the RAW Output Format to 32-bit on the Develop Assistant, you can then batch process to 32-bit TIFF files (don’t forget to change the output format for the TIFF export options) and stitch those TIFFs. Because 32-bit is an unbounded pixel format, you don’t have to worry about clipping highlights or losing valuable pixel data, and you can tone map your finished panorama, giving you complete control over its tonality.
• Statistical stacking: astrophotography is a great example where you absolutely need all the precision you can muster. You can take the same approach as with panorama stitching by processing to 32-bit TIFFs and then adding them to a new stack. This allows you to take advantage of the extra precision for the tonal stretching required with astrophotography processing.

What Does Affinity Photo Cost?

Affinity Photo costs a one-time price of $49.95 for the desktop version of Affinity Photo. It is available in both the Microsoft Store and the App Store on Mac. You can also buy and download it directly from Serif.

What is Included in the License?

As a private individual you are allowed to download and install the app on all computers that you own. No matter if it is one, two, five or ten. However, if you buy Affinity Photo for Windows, and you own a Mac, you need to also purchase the Mac version of the software. So the license covers all desktop devices you own running that particular operation system (Windows or Mac).

If you want Affinity Photo for iPad, you need a separate license for that too. We have a short section further down in this review that discuss the iPad version.

The powerful Selection Brush Tool now has a new option which is enabled by default, and it’s called Soft edges. Whenever you create a selection using this brush, when you release the mouse button to commit the selection some quick edge analysis is performed and the selection becomes ‘matted’ or antialiased. This is an incredible timesaver because it negates the need to jump into selection refinement for quite a number of use cases. Previously, even if you were cutting out a straightforward object with distinct edges, you would often need to use selection refinement to avoid having a ‘jagged’ cutout—now, simply create your selection, add a mask and you’re done!

You can of course disable ‘Soft edges’ on the context toolbar if you prefer a selection comprised of absolute pixels (e.g. for selecting shapes or working with pixel art).

Develop (совершенствование). Модуль для коррекции фотографий. Баланс белого, экспозиция, обрезка, удаление «красных глаз» и т. д. – все для глубокой ретуши и «вытягивания» снимков.

Tone Mapping (тоновое отображение). Продвинутая корректировка тоновой составляющей изображения. Софт предлагает несколько базовых предустановок, а также даёт возможность делать коррекцию вручную. Любые изменения тут же отображаются в информационных панелях (гистограмма, инфо).

Export (экспорт). Хорошо и удобно выполненная Personas. Можно нарезать куски изображения и сохранять их в различных форматах. Множество настроек и расширений для сохранения. Все это делает «Export» достойной альтернативой похожих операций в Photoshop.

В Affinity Photo есть еще немало интересного и оригинального, например:

• редактирование 32-х битных изображений;

• максимальная совместимость и полноценная поддержка MacBook Pro Bar Touch;

• огромное количество профилей камер (линз, объективов) и профессиональная работа с RAW;

• возможность создания пространственных фильтров;

• продвинутое написание макросов;

• работа с 360-ти градусными изображениями;

• текстовые стили;

• совмещение различного фокуса нескольких снимков в момент их объединения;

• полная поддержка наиболее распространенных растровых расширений (PSD, JPG, SVG, EPS, PNG, PDF, TIFF) и большинства цветовых пространств.

Еще одной характерной особенностью программы является ее высокая скорость работы, точное управление цветом и неразрушающая обработка RAW. По этим аспектам Affinity Photo ни в чем не уступает Photoshop, а где-то его и превосходит.

Enhanced brush modifier

This little-known feature is incredibly useful for brush-based workflows, especially architecture workflows where you need to quickly create oval brushes for blocking in shadow detail.

With a brush tool selected, holding Ctrl+Alt (macOS) or Alt+Right click (Windows) then dragging with left-click will offer you the usual modifier to alter the brush Width and Hardness. All fairly standard so far. However, if you single click on the left mouse button, you will now toggle to Shape and Spacing instead. As mentioned above, this allows you to quickly create a ‘squished’ or oval brush shape. Single-clicking again will toggle to Rotation, then another single click will move back to Width and Hardness.

Between these three modifier options, you have an expanded amount of control over your brush properties without ever leaving your canvas.

Affinity Photo Review Overall Rating: 4.0 (out of 5)

Pros:

Layer based editing. Panorama, HDR merge, focus stacking, macro support. Raw image support, but also works with raster and vector images. Very similar to Photoshop, but a bit easier to use.

Cons:

Limited lens-profile based corrections (in the develop persona). You cannot create custom workspaces. Just like Photoshop, it is not an easy program to learn for novices.

Quick Verdict

Affinity Photo is comparable to Photoshop in many ways. We think that most users would be very satisfied with the features included at a low price.

It seems like Photoshop can get more details from the shadows and highlights than in Affinity Photo. However, in version 1.7 the shadow and highlight adjustment algorithm was rewritten.

Affinity Photo is still young compared to Photoshop, and the shortcomings are not deal-breakers for anyone but the pickiest photographers.

Downloading and Setting Up Affinity Photo

The download size in App Store is 349MB. After installing (the Mac version,) Affinity Photo takes up around 1GB of disk space. By comparison, Photoshop takes up 2GB.

The first time you run the program, you will see the startup panel, with tutorials, samples, and links to the Affinity User Forum. There isn’t a guided tour of the interface like you find in, i.e., Luminar.

The startup panel also includes a New Document link to a dialogue, which helps you set the properties for a new document. As a photographer, a link to open an existing image would be welcomed. However, it is a minor thing, as you probably want to disable the startup panel from opening once you get to know Affinity Photo.

Many other improvements and fixes

It wouldn’t be a major point release without tons of quality-of-life improvements! Here’s a list of the most impressive upgrades:

• High intensity colours are now supported when compositing with filter effects (HDR authoring)
• New stock brushes, including a masking set for quick and easy compositing
• (macOS) A unified toolbar which increases working real estate on your screen
• The ability to read XMP sidebar metadata (copyright information, image tagging) when developing RAW files
• Selecting a mask now automatically toggles to a greyscale colour model, then toggles back to the previous colour model once another layer is selected
• PSB import stability has been improved
• The HSV colour model has been reintroduced to the HSL adjustment dialog, giving you more control over how colour saturation is applied
• Improved JPEG encoding for better quality at reduced file sizes

This feature is one we know a lot of you have been waiting for. Affinity Photo has always been able to import (and export) PSD documents, but now it can also import smart objects. Smart objects are converted to ‘embedded documents’ and a similar workflow can be applied: simply select the embedded document layer and choose Edit document on the context toolbar (or double click on the layer thumbnail) to open the smart object in a new tab. This is commonly used for mockups where you can drop in your own imagery, then go back to the parent document and see your design with the correct perspective.
